First born sons were always named after their Father, Father's father or Mother's Father. Since there was a battle for who would name the child,,it was settled by giving this son all the Names. Thus , Charles for his father and the two middle names. William for His Grandfather William Henry Hasty and Luther for His Grandfather Luther "Suitcase" Simpson.
Shortly after birth he was nicknamed Chuck. A moody, thin and busy child from what stories I have been able to hear or learn from the older children. As soon as he was big enough to pack wood or help with farm chores, he worked along side his Father. Often getting into trouble and having many fights. I was told that If he lost a fight that his Father would use a strap on him, so he learned never to loose and to use whatever means necessary to get the better of any opponent.
Chuck was known to bully the younger children : teasing and taking what little food or toys they had made or found. He was taught to hitch & drive horses as soon as he was big enough to lift the tack, grew to over 6 feet tall, and from his early labor at farm work developed a strong body and ways to get whatever he wanted. He was the oldest and would inherit any and all of his father's worldly goods according to the belief of that time.
As a young man he worked in a factory in Pekin, Illinois til he was drafted into the Army. He served in the Motor Pool during most of his service in the Army.
He was married to Eleanor Bitner shortly after completing boot camp. Was step father to her two children, Paul and Barbara Ferguson. Had One son: Named Charles W.L. Hasty, Jr. 2 daughters: Darlene and Maxine. 1 adopted daughter, Bonnie.
He lived most of his life North of Manito, Illionois on a well traveled road called the "blacktop" in a little run down house that he slowly remodeled as he could afford it. He worked at the Keystone factory in Pekin and did auto repair in the little shed he called his "garage" to support & care for his children & step-children. Barely finishing 8th grade and some high school, he had found his place in life and enjoyed most everything that life had to offer. Most of us cousins were afraid of him because of his size and rough ways. Though we played with his children, we never spent much time around him or his wife.
