Charles Edward Hasty-Grandpa

Charles and Allie (Simpson) Hasty

Just a copy with facts.. Places and dates.   I know as a fact that G/pa had been married once before since there are children from that marriage.   And G/pa was much older than stated here.

The Only photo I have of G/pa Hasty

Grandpa Charles Edward Hasty was a farmer most of his life.   He was in an accident as a young man and had one leg shorter than the other from being ran over by a train and almost cut the left leg completely off.  He spent many weeks in a hospital before being released and had to learn to walk all over again.

He was the family doctor and shoe repair/maker for his children (14 ).  If he saw a piece of leather, he saved it.  All his tools and mediciene book went with him before any of his clothes.   "Clothes I can replace, but not these tools and my book."

Each Spring he lined up all the children and gave them his home remedy of burnt then crushed egg shells in Castor Oil for "worms".   Any cuts or abrasions he immediately poured Turpentine on it and wrapped up in his cleanest kerchief.  No one dared remove it except him.  For high fevors he piled on the blankets til you sweated the "poison" out.

His favorite saying " Bathing is weakening, only need it once a year, when you go to weddings, funerals or fall in the river."

Allie always felt like the "ugly duckling" of the family.   But perhaps is was her tomboyish ways that set her apart.  She is larger boned and would rather be out working along side her father & brothers.  Trotting horses was her passion when she was in her teens.  Each evening after the evening meal, all the girls would gather in their mothers room, learn to sew, gossip and have the next days chores assigned.   Her mother grew ill* and was not able to be up and around much, but she seen that all the household chores were done.

*we believe there was a thyroid or diabetic condition that caused her having to be "bed ridden".

Luther & Mary Emmajane (Whitmore) Simpson

One of the few pictures and information I am able to find on the Simpson side.  Luther "Suitcase" Simpson also was a farmer for most of his life.   Just why he has the nic-name "Suitcase" I have  been told that he never settled down for very long in his youth and literally lived out of that battered suitcase.    I often wondered if he had it buried with him as it was known that he still had it when my Mother was a young girl.

From my Mothers memories she tells me Grandpa Simpson was a fun person to be around.  Always had treats for them hidden in his pockets and could turn any bad situation or feelings into a joke.   Would break out into a dance or song and give everyone a good laugh.     Mary was the quiet, hard working and strict person, keeping all her children busy with chores and yet spent her evenings filled with what they were doing.   They all had their time each evening, talking or gossiping: mainly reporting how their day went and what still needed to be done.

Allie used to say that she was her father's favorite child as he gave her almost everything he could when she asked for it.   A trotting horse & buggy was her birthday present when she turned 16.
